Ruddy Duck Bill Shaking Behaviour

Ruddy Duck

While birding north of Calgary on June 7, 2013, Christine and I saw Ruddy Ducks in a variety of ponds shaking the bill in a repetitive fashion. I was not able to find out if this is a territorial, threat, or courtship display. Breeding continues through early June in Canada.
The duck puts the bill down against the breast feathers and shakes the bill up and down repetitively for ten seconds or so and then resumes normal activity. The duck can do this several times in a row. Most of the males in the ponds engaged in this activity.

This duck seemed very happy about his efforts.
