Columbia Spotted Frog - Rana luteiventris
I hear lots of frogs, but rarely see a frog or even a tadpole. Today, however, I lucked out when I noted some movement on the ground by an old beaver dam that I regularly use to cross over Curly Creek.
The Columbia Spotted Frog is one of four frogs in Alberta (the Boreal Chorus Frog, Northern Leopard Frog, and Wood Frog are the other three).
The Alberta Environment and Sustainable Resources Development website reports this frog is usually only resident above 6,600 feet. but the frog I spotted (pun intended) apparently prefers the less alpine habitat of the Elbow River Valley.
