Three-toed Woodpecker

Three-toed Woodpecker - Picoides tridactylus

These woodpeckers lack inner rear toes.

The stocky short bill is adapted to flake off bark rather than to excavate the wood.

The hole in the tree below is the start of a nesting cavity.
